Soweto Art and Craft Fair is one of Soweto’s best and most successful market held at the “Soweto Theatre” every first Saturday of every month. The offerings include the best creations such as locally made fashions, craft works, visual art, home deco and wrapping it up with world-classic live performances.
The organizers’ aims to create a platform where local people can showcase their talents and trading. The intent of hosting the event is to close the existing gap created by unemployment in the community. Young people must start taking their talents serious by promoting and marketing themselves.
Mbali Radebe, one of the organizers, is happy with the number of people (audience and artists) gathering at the Soweto Theatre for showcasing and trading their artworks.
The Soweto Art and Craft Development is a NPO based in Soweto and was started by the young Entrepreneurs(Lefoko Phetlhu, Mbali Radebe and Simphiwe Twala) in partnership with ConcertSA, who sponsors the main band during the event, and Jozi Unsigned-who sponsor music coordinators.
The attendance is, however, different following other activities which takes place at the venue, and thus creating confusion to the audiences who knows our dates.
The community is replete with young people who are talented and the majority of whom are unemployed. The duo is unhappy with the Gauteng Provincial Government because they are adamant to assisting the young people thereby contributing resources to the course. “Teach a man to fish so that they can be able fish when you are no longer there to provide for them”
Lefoko Phetlhu’s passion is on developing young people as the trio is touched by the plight of the youth whose talent goes unnoticed. The team is busy putting together new plans to improve creativity in the community and to continue been the developmental hub of our people.
